Plastic Ingenuity Earns a 2024 WorldStar Award for Electronics Packaging

Otter Products package redesign recognized for innovation on a global scale

Plastic Ingenuity, the largest custom thermoformer in North America, has been recognized by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) with a WorldStar 2024 award. Only eight products in the electronics category were selected for this year’s WorldStar Global Packaging Awards.

Plastic Ingenuity’s winning package is a Glass Screen Protection Installation Tool for Otter Products, transitioning from an injection-molded tray made with 100% non-recyclable virgin material to a light-gauge thermoformed package using 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material, which is also curbside recyclable. Additionally, the redesigned package reduced costs by almost 40%, resulting from the switch to thermoforming and a universal design that reduced SKUs and inventory requirements. The new, lightweight tray also helps improve package distribution and transportation efficiencies.

Besides economic and sustainability enhancements, Plastic Ingenuity improved functionality. The new design protects the glass product and is as an installation tool. Plastic Ingenuity’s thermoformed tray can be used for virtually all smartphone devices with greater accuracy than previous installation tools.

Since 1970, WPO has presented WorldStar Awards to recognize the best packaging innovations across the globe. The prestigious award recognizes leaders in the industry for creating packaging solutions of the future while responding to new challenges and global trends across sustainability, branding and UX (user experience), food safety and smart packaging. Packages eligible for WorldStar Awards are those that have received a national or regional packaging award during the past two years from a packaging competition that is recognized by WPO. Plastic Ingenuity announced its AmeriStar Award in August 2023. WPO will present Plastic Ingenuity’s award for electronics packaging design during ProPak Asia this June.
