Gary Visser Honored as 8th Recipient of Joe Grygny Lifetime Achievement Award

The  International Molded Fiber Association honored Gary Visser with the Joe Grygny Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s recent Annual Conference in Miami, Florida.

The International Molded Fiber Association (IMFA) has awarded Gary Visser its highest honor, the Joe Grygny Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his distinguished career and influence in molded fiber manufacturing and sustainable packaging. Visser accepted the award last week at the association’s Annual Conference.

Visser’s technical vision and operational leadership have helped shape the modern molded fiber landscape. From early career milestones in South Africa’s pulp and paper sector to the transformative growth of Dynamic Fibre Moulding (DFM), Visser’s approach has consistently emphasized innovation, team development, and long-term thinking.

During his two-decade tenure as CEO of DFM, Visser led the young company to capture over 50% of Southern Africa’s molded fiber egg carton market. Central to this success was his engineering of a groundbreaking closed-loop fiber recovery system that utilized waste fibers from a neighboring paper mill – an early model of circular manufacturing. Visser’s leadership was instrumental in growing DFM into a company with both market dominance and a strong social footprint, creating 270 jobs in a region with 40% unemployment and maintaining a commitment to people over profits, even during times of economic strain.

“Gary’s operational strategies and collaborative philosophy elevated not just DFM, but molded fiber as a product category,” said James Gallacher, Managing Director at OMNI-PAC and longtime collaborator and friend of Visser. “His technical mind is unmatched, but it’s his integrity and commitment to industry-wide progress that truly stand out.”

Beyond corporate leadership, Visser has been a guiding force in fostering innovation through collaboration. As a consultant and mentor to emerging sustainable packaging startups, he championed cross-sector transparency and helped guide research and development efforts aimed at displacing plastic with performance-driven fiber solutions.

“Over more years than I care to count working in molded fiber, showing up to DFM rarely felt like work – even on long and challenging days, I was still just solving problems alongside my good mates,” said Gary Visser. “Molded fiber is poised for incredible growth in the coming years and decades, and I’m excited to see where the next generation of passionate leaders takes our industry.”

Following his retirement, Visser answered IMFA founder Joe Grygny’s call to return to industry leadership, serving as Executive Chairman during a critical period of organizational transition. His direction has helped IMFA strengthen its international presence and expand its member engagement efforts, particularly through knowledge-sharing and best-practice exchanges. Visser is committed to continued strategic leadership of IMFA.

Speaking directly to Visser, recently retired CKF President and 2023 Joe Grygny Award Winner Ian Anderson shared, “You have definitely impacted me over the past nearly 20 years, Gary. I would say ‘google’ leader, and your photo will appear. Your attributes are many. You are knowledgeable, hardworking (did I say not too patient), and really tireless. Your personal attributes, straight forwardness (did I say threaten to resign a few times?), integrity, approachability, and results orientation are memorable for me. I consider you a good friend. You are a good man, good at business, relationships, leadership, family and community. Your approach has been no nonsense and exactly what we needed.  We fought headwinds, we had tailwinds, no doubt the cycle will continue.”

Outside of his transformative career in the molded fiber industry, Visser has committed his life to social services for those in need. While leading DFM, Visser helped establish a shelter for women and children seeking safety as well the region’s first secondary school, which today serves 1700 students annually. Visser now resides south of Perth, Australia with his wife, Kim.

The Joe Grygny Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who exemplify excellence, leadership, and service in the molded fiber industry. Gary Visser’s career reflects not only a record of technical achievement and business acumen but also a legacy of integrity, mentorship, and long-term value creation.
