Announcing Shurtape® Brand HP 535 Hot Melt Packaging Tape

Heavy duty packaging tape for sealing high-value packages, and 100% recycled corrugated cardboard

With HP 535 hot melt packaging tape, Shurtape Technologies, LLC, an industry-leading manufacturer and marketer of pressure-sensitive tapes, has fulfilled the industry’s need for a more robust packaging tape that helps secure high-value packages, reduces the likelihood of open returns and supports supply chain sustainability. Shurtape® brand HP 535 is a premium grade, heavy duty packaging tape specifically formulated for sealing recycled corrugated cartons, including 100% recycled corrugated cardboard.

A Robust Tape to Meet Greater Shipping Demands

With the continued growth of eCommerce, the shipping industry is processing and delivering an ever-increasing volume of heavier, bulkier and more valuable packages, including food, beverages, industrial products and electronics, directly to the doorsteps of consumers and businesses. HP 535 hot melt packaging tape offers one of the most robust, secure box sealing tape solutions, reducing the chance of compromised packages and reducing open returns for manufacturers and distributors.

With a 3.0 mil total thickness and a 50 micron biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film backing that resists nicks and tears – even in the harshest shipping environments – HP 535 is a highly durable tape suited for rigorous supply chains. Constructed with a special adhesive formula that offers better initial tack, higher holding power and a long-lasting seal, HP 535 provides a more secure seal for difficult-to-stick-to carton substrates.

“When shipping items like wine, food or electronics direct to a consumer’s doorstep, producers are dealing with a high-value product that is going through a very harsh shipping environment,” said Bradley Dunlap, senior product manager, packaging, Shurtape Technologies, LLC. “In that scenario, you want a fail-safe tape that will unquestionably withstand the rigors of that supply chain.”

Supporting More Sustainable Supply Chains

Recycled corrugated cartons are becoming increasingly common in shipping as manufacturers focus on supply chain sustainability. According to a report by Smithers, the global demand for corrugated packaging has increased by almost 4 percent annually since 2018 and is expected to reach $300 billion in 2023. While recycled corrugated cartons offer environmental benefits, they also create packaging and shipping challenges due to a less-porous substrate that makes it difficult for the tape’s adhesive to form a secure bond to the package. In addition, the composition of recycled corrugated cartons comes with a high degree of variability, presenting additional sealing challenges. The more aggressive adhesive of HP 535 offers higher shear, tack and holding power, minimizing the impact carton variability can cause and ensuring packages remain sealed at every stage in the shipping process.

Custom Printing for Branding and Marketing Opportunities

Shurtape® offers printing on tape backing, which means HP 535 can be customized with logos, brand names and messages, including bilingual prints. “Because packaging tape is a component with which consumers directly interface when opening a product, it offers brands a unique marketing engagement element at the end of the supply chain,” said Bradley Dunlap, senior product manager, packaging, Shurtape Technologies, LLC.

Complete Package Sealing Solutions

HP 535 is the highest grade product in the Shurtape® Hot Melt Specialty Packaging Tape family, which includes HP 132® and HP 232®, which are designed specifically for cold temperature environments; and HP 235, a medium duty tape also designed for recycled corrugated cartons.

When paired with Shurtape’s ShurSEAL® automated Packaging Solutions featuring Folded Edge® Technology, HP 535 provides the highest quality carton seal in the industry.
