Addressing the Environmental Toll of Traditional Packaging

By Andrew Meyer, AeroFlexx CEO

The global push for environmental sustainability is getting increasingly acknowledged in the consumer goods sector with a focus on packaging sustainability. As consumers become more aware and conscious of their environmental impact, companies are reevaluating their packaging practices for features and benefits in line with sustainability. This shift towards sustainability not only benefits the planet but also presents a unique opportunity for brands and product packaging.

Plastic production involves the consumption of fossil fuels, leading to a high output of greenhouse gas emissions. Without plastic recycling practices established, waste could potentially end up in the environment. Plastic waste poses a significant threat to marine life as large amounts can get into oceans and waterways, causing pollution and exacerbating the toll on the environment.

The Rise of Sustainable Packaging

In response to these environmental concerns, companies are adopting sustainable packaging alternatives. These alternatives encompass a variety of approaches, including plastic reduction and recyclability.

Plastic Reduction: Minimizing unnecessary packaging and upfront plastic content saves resources and can lower manufacturing and production costs. In addition, companies are incorporating strategies supporting circularity. Those that adopt a model aligned with the circular economy can create a closed-loop system to minimize waste.

Recyclable Packaging: Packaging that is easily recyclable encourages consumers to participate in recycling programs, which prevents materials from ending up in landfills. Recycling systems make it convenient for consumers to recycle plastic products and conserve resources.

Packaging Innovations

Companies working to implement strategies for eco-friendly and user-friendly packaging can meet or exceed sustainability commitments while enhancing the packaging experience. By transitioning from a traditional plastic bottle closure, such as a cap or pump, to an integrated self-sealing valve, brands can increase their packaging integrity and reliability while lowering plastic content at the source.

Source reduction, also known as waste minimization or waste prevention, involves less waste generation and is addressed by implementing strategies like plastic reduction. For the context of packaging, this can be done by designing lightweight packaging and products with recycled content and less plastic content upfront.

How This Benefits Companies and Consumers

A growing number of consumers prefer products with eco-friendly packaging, leading to increased brand loyalty for those supporting sustainability.

Consumer Preference: Studies show that an increasing number of consumers prefer products with eco-friendly packaging. Adopting sustainable packaging practices can enhance brand reputation and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. Brand loyalty can be built by leveraging 360-degree design capabilities that tell a brand’s story.

Regulatory Compliance: As governments establish stricter regulations and targets for the environment, embracing source reduction and optimizing supply chains can help companies stay ahead of compliance guidelines and avoid potential penalties.

Cost Savings: By simplifying the supply chain, companies lower the total cost of ownership through the reduction in transportation, inventory costs, and warehouse requirements to shrink the environmental footprint overall.
