PPG adds BPA-NI beverage can end coatings to PPG INNOVEL and PPG iSENSE series

Increasing global production for easy-open end coating solutions

PPG recently announced the expansion of its easy-open end coatings for aluminum beverage cans to meet increased global market demand. The coatings are engineered for the lid of aluminum beverage cans to preserve taste, quality and shelf life while enhancing manufacturing productivity. They have been rigorously tested and approved by leading global canmakers and brands, and have been formulated without the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and PFAS to comply with global regulations.

The expanded easy-open end coatings range includes:

  • PPG INNOVEL® PRO PPG2489 coating series, an internal coating solution offering proven performance for high-speed stamping lines and can withstand high temperatures and pressures for a wide range of beverages.
  • PPG Innovel EVO PPG6720 coating series, a waterborne internal coating solution for beer. It is designed for low film weight applications and has low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to solvent-based coatings, making it a sustainably advantaged* solution while meeting quality, performance and regulatory requirements.
  • PPG iSENSE® PPG5018 coating series, a robust external coating designed for fast line speeds, available in clear and gold.

“Our beverage end coating solutions address critical challenges in the beverage industry while meeting food contact regulations,” said Viktoria Tager, PPG global easy-open ends strategic market manager, Packaging Coatings. “Our latest solutions maintain performance across a diverse range of beverage products and manufacturing processes, making them a proven and reliable choice for the metal packaging industry.”

Highlights of these three products include:

  • Sustainably advantaged attributes: Driven by customer demands, these coatings facilitate increased line speeds, higher productivity and less waste. PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 coating has the potential to lower carbon emissions by 20% using lower film weights.
  • Regulatory compliance: These coatings are BPA-NI and PFAS-NI to meet evolving food contact material regulations.
  • Local production: With manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia Pacific, PPG’s robust supply chain reduces the cost of production and transportation for our customers.
  • Versatility: They are compatible with various manufacturing processes for coil coaters and canmakers and are suitable for both 2-piece and 3-piece beverage can systems.
  • Robust: They offer extreme flexibility for high-speed stamping while meeting the requirements for hot-fill, retort and pasteurization capabilities.
  • Global adaptability: This coating technology performs consistently on a variety of plant lines, reducing the complexity of operations for canmakers and coaters with multiple locations.
  • Proven results: PPG Innovel PRO PPG2489 and PPG iSense PPG5018 coatings are proven to protect a wide range of beverage products against flavor transfer, corrosion and challenging ingredient formulations including beer, seltzers, carbonated soft drinks, sparkling water, wine, juices, isotonic drinks, ready-to-drink cocktails, energy drinks and other beverages known in the industry as “hard-to-hold.”
